New Alliance Mayor of Newtownabbey, Alderman Lynn Frazer, has spoken of her privilege at becoming the borough's first citizen, and promised a year of "good news".

Speaking as she was elected for the 2006/7 term, Alderman Frazer stated: "The election of a Mayor from a cross-community party on a cross-community vote is surely a positive step for the whole borough. I will seek to build on that.

"We in Newtownabbey are proud that our Council is already leading the way in partnership working, particularly with effect to public health, and we will aim to set new standards in this regard."

After the meeting, Alliance Party Leader David Ford, the local MLA, stated: "I am delighted that Lynn will serve as Newtownabbey's first ever non-Unionist mayor. The fact she was elected unanimously by the Council shows the high esteem in which she is held by all sides."

Alderman William Decourcy of the DUP was elected Deputy Mayor.
