Parsley shock at young road deaths in North Down

9.39.32am GMT Wed 5th Apr 2006

North Down Alliance Councillor Ian James Parsley has expressed shock at three young road deaths in North Down in the space of three nights. Two people were killed as a car left the road on the Ballysallagh Road on Saturday night, and a 16-year-old cyclist was killed on the Groomsport Bypass late on Tuesday.

Councillor Parsley stated: "I have spoken to family members of one of the victims and words simply cannot describe the finality of such an appalling loss. My sincerest sympathies go out to all the family circles.

"One accepts that once anyone gets behind the wheel of a car or the handlebars of a bike there is individual responsibility, but I remain firmly of the view that the Government can do more in terms of making roads structurally safer and improving education. I will do all I can to continue making that case to anyone who will listen, we simply cannot afford this carnage on our roads."
