Ashfield achievement illustrates contribution of the secondary sector to NI education

6.52.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 14th Mar 2006

Alliance Deputy Leader and Education Spokesperson Naomi Long has commended the selection of Ashfield Girls High School as a "specialist school", saying it was a great achievement for the whole community.

Naomi Long stated: "I, like many across the community, am delighted that Ashfield has been selected as a specialist school. The announcement is due recognition of the outstanding work of staff and pupils to make this come about.

"It should be emphasized that this is an achievement for the whole community, and will reflect well on everyone here, whether directly linked to Ashfield or not.

"Most of all, this is an impressive example of the contribution of the secondary sector to education in Northern Ireland. While we have seen an absolute concentration on the grammar sector in recent months, it should not be forgotten that more children attend secondary schools, many of which provide an outstanding all-round education."
