Parsley salutes Northern Ireland triumph
12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 7th Sep 2005
Young Alliance Chairman Ian James Parsley has saluted
the Northern Ireland football team after its World Cup
victory over England.
The North Down Councillor stated: "People often say we
cannot compete on the world stage. People often say we
cannot work together effectively. People often say the
people of Northern Ireland will always be divided.
Lawrie Sanchez and his team have illustrated, for one
small moment, that this is simply not true.
"They have shown that people from all different
background in Northern Ireland can come together to
compete successfully at world level. They have set the
standards that everyone in Northern Ireland can and
should aspire to.
"I congratulate them on their well deserved triumph.
Once again, sport has brought us all together. We have
seen plenty of Northern Ireland at its worst, even in
the past few weeks - but most people who live here
know that Northern Ireland at its best is a
fundamentally decent wee place. It is nice to show it
on the world stage occasionally!"
