Alliance condemns East Belfast pipe bombing

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 22nd Aug 2005

East Belfast Alliance Assembly member, Cllr Naomi Long, has condemned a pipe bomb attack on a young couple at their home at Cheviot Avenue on Sunday evening.

Cllr Long, former Chair of the East Belfast Sub-group of the District Policing Partnership Board, said, "This was a reckless attack in a residential area, which could have easily caused serious injury or even death.

"It is no thanks to the attackers that no-one was injured and it is clear that from the fact that a number of properties were damaged that the perpetrators have shown scant regard for the entire local community.

"There is no excuse for this kind of violence, and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to contact the local police."
