Alliance relief at peaceful parade

12.00.00am GMT Tue 9th Aug 2005

North Antrim Alliance representative Jayne Dunlop has expressed relief that the Republican parade in Ballymena passed off without incident.

The former Alliance Party Chairperson stated: "It is a great relief that there was no trouble during the parade. It was a very small parade with effective marshalling and passed off peacefully.

"However, the uniforms worn by one of the bands were of a paramilitary nature. This was wholly inappropriate. What sign does this send to others seeking a future free from violence and the trappings or paramilitarism?

"The fact is this parade had no purpose other than to stir up sectarian tension in the town. People will only be relieved that it has passed peacefully."
