Alliance supports Gay Pride parade

12.00.00am GMT Thu 21st Jul 2005

Alliance Party Deputy Leader and Equality Spokesperson, Eileen Bell, has written to the Parades Commission in support of the forthcoming Gay Pride parade. It has been objected to by the 'Stop the Parade Coalition' who are organising a counter-demonstration.

Eileen Bell stated:

"I believe that Belfast City Centre is clearly shared, common space, and should be readily accessible to all.

"The gay and lesbian section of the community is drawn from all walks of life. They are an integral part of this society.

"I do not believe that there is any case for either banning or restricting this parade. It is now an annual part of the calendar, and has flourished despite the controversies surrounding it.

"Indeed, in many other parts of the world, gay pride events are major events that are warmly embraced by the cities hosting them. For example, I understand that the Metropolitan Police now participate in the London parade.

"Everyone exercising their rights to freedom of assembly and of free speech must also have a duty to so in a responsible manner. I am confident that the parade organisers are aware of their responsibilities. Any issues relating to the conduct of individuals can be dealt with under the appropriate legislation."
