Alliance backs Eames on Long March

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 22nd Jun 1999

David Ford, Alliance Chief Whip, has backed the Archbishop, Robin Eames, in his call for the 'Long March' from Londonderry to Portadown to be called off.

David Ford said:

"The organisers of the 'The Long March' risk bringing protestors on to the street but having no idea how to handle any problems that will arise if elements of the march get out of control."

" I am interested in equality and rights for all, not just for a section of our community. This march is quite clearly not about rights for all. If it was, it would not be arriving in Drumcree the day before the march there is due to take place."

" If the march is not called off, I hope ordinary decent people will ignore it."
