McGarry welcomes movement on Act of Settlement

12.00.00am GMT Tue 9th Nov 1999

Alliance President, Dr Philip McGarry, has welcomed the news that moves are being made to amend the law that makes it illegal for a monarch to marry a Roman Catholic.

Two members of the House of Lords are to propose a change in the Act of Settlement, which has been law since the 18th Century.

Dr McGarry said

" It is time to amend this ancient and outdated law. It is clearly unacceptable that it remains illegal for the Monarch to marry a Roman Catholic."

" I call on the government to give it its full and unconditional support, and to include it in the Queens Speech at the opening of the new session of Parliament later this month."
