Police petition at Castlereagh Council could be in breach of equality legislation: Long12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 22nd Mar 2002 Alliance Councillor Michael Long has expressed his anger following reports that Police Federation chairman Jimmy Spratt has signed a petition calling for the removal of Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan at Castlereagh Council. Cllr Long said that placing such a petition would likely be in breach of Equality legislation. Cllr Long stated: "Alliance opposed the introduction of this petition at last month's council meeting and we understood that legal opinion is currently being sought on this issue." "I was therefore amazed to see that not only was the petition available, but that outside bodies were now using council offices for this kind of political stunt." "However, I believe that having a petition on such a politically contentious issue would be in conflict with the council's commitment to Equality legislation." ENDS.
