Bell calls for public support for Belfast peace rally

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 1st Aug 2002

Alliance deputy leader Eileen Bell MLA has urged the public to come out in their thousands at tomorrow's peace rally at Belfast City Hall.

Mrs Bell said: "After the sectarian murders of two entirely innocent men in the past few days, people feel understandably angry, frustrated and saddened by ongoing paramilitary violence."

"We need to send a signal out to the terrorist thugs that they do not have the support of the people here. They are not acting on anyone else's behalf, and their actions are bereft of any moral justification or political mandate."

"My message to the cynics is that it is never a waste of time for the people to express their support for peace."
