Alliance welcomes 'Good Friday Agreement'

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 2nd May 1998

The Good Friday Agreement has made on balance some important contributions to the cause of liberalism throughout the island of Ireland. There are however some hidden dangers that could arise through the implementation of certain aspects of the document.

Alliance accepts the document as a whole,

welcome some aspects

but be wary of how others happen

changes to articles 2 & 3, British and Irish constitutions

Consent as key concept

clearly to happen on an civic rather than an ethnic form of self-determination

danger in human rights; institutionalising a parity of esteem

RoI not incorporating the EHCR

equivocating on reform of emergency legislation
