Deep concern at LVF flags in Loughview12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 4th Jun 2003 North Down Alliance Councillor, Stephen Farry, has expressed the deep concerns and fears of the community in Holywood at the recent proliferation of LVF flags in the Loughview Estate. Stephen Farry said: "There is great unease and deep concern within Holywood and in particular the Loughview Estate at the recent proliferation of the LVF Flags. Many people are privately expressing their fears to us. "Loughview is a mixed estate, and there is little or no support for these flags within the local community. "There is the world of difference between people putting union flags on their homes and bunting on the streets for traditional celebrations over the summer, and the erection of flags which glorify the deeds of a paramilitary organisation. "I am not sure what message that the people putting up the flags are trying to send. However, the message that comes across is one of intimidation to all sections of the community. The reaction of many people from a Protestant background is 'not in my name'. "The Sunday World is to be congratulated for highlighting the issue. But the primary issue is not whether or not these flags damage Holywood's bid to be the best kept medium town in Ireland. The main problem is the impact that these flags have on the quality of life of local people. "The people of Loughview want their estate back." ENDS
