New road sign will help save lives: Duncan

12.00.00am GMT Tue 25th Jan 2005

Councillor Sara Duncan has welcomed Roads Service's prompt response to her complaints about motorists on the Saintfield Road driving through red lights at the pelican crossing at Beechill/Lenaghan.

Roads Service has erected a new sign warning motorists that they are approaching the crossing, which is beyond a bend in the road going away from town.

Having lobbied the Department of Regional Development to install a crossing, Councillor Duncan was dismayed when pedestrians complained of speeding motorists who ignored the pedestrian traffic lights.

Cllr Duncan said: "This is excellent news for users of this crossing, and will improve road safety on a stretch of road where lives were in danger. I would plead with drivers on the Saintfield Road to read the new warning signs, and give pedestrians a chance to cross this busy road safely."
