McCarthy welcomes free travel for elderly throughout Ireland

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 28th Sep 2004

ALLIANCE Assembly member Kieran McCarthy has welcomed moves to introduce free public transport for the elderly in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Currently, free travel passes for the elderly entitle holders to free public transport within each jurisdiction, and between them. However, internal journeys within each jurisdiction are not then covered.

Mr McCarthy, who is Alliance's Spokesperson on the Elderly, said:

"This is good news for elderly travellers, as it means that using public transport throughout Ireland is now free for those with a Senior Smart Pass.

"I would urge older people to sign up to the Senior Smart Pass, as this move will enable thousands to take advantage of public transport in a way that was never before possible."
