Ford attacks SDLP's 'never, never, never' attitude to reform

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 22nd Sep 2004

Speaking at the conclusion of today's political talks at Stormont, Alliance Leader David Ford stated:

"If there is to be progress, then parties have to learn the difference between defending the fundamental principles of the Agreement and recognising the need for reform.

"Alliance is committed fully to the principles of the Agreement, but the Agreement Mark I has not worked for two years. Reform is now the only realistic position to get the institutions back.

"We will continue to engage with those parties that are willing to move forward. As the DUP and Sinn Fein edge slowly towards each other, it would be ironic if the 'not an inch' mentality of the SDLP impeded that engagement."
