Alliance MLA welcomes civil service smoke ban12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 5th Jul 2004 ALLIANCE Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has welcomed the news that the Government plans to introduce a ban on smoking in its buildings from September. Mr McCarthy stated: "Now that the Government has moved to protect its own employees, there is no reason why a more widespread workplace smoking ban should not come into operation as soon as possible. "There is tremendous public support for a smoking ban in all workplaces, and I am fully behind those 4,500 doctors at Downing Street today who called for a total ban. There is mounting evidence that passive smoking is a dangerous killer, and if the Government is serious about improving public health, then it must act quickly on this important matter."
