Councillor criticises refusal to fund sex education project

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 18th May 2004

ALLIANCE Councillor Lynn Frazer (Newtownabbey) has criticised the Department of Education for refusing to fund a successful sex education project in Northern Ireland.

The Department of Education has refused to fund the Love for Life charity's Relationship and Sex Education programmes in Northern Ireland secondary schools.

Cllr Frazer said: "Given Northern Ireland's pregnancy rate and the incidence of sexually transmitted infections, this decision was surprising. Teachers often find relationship and sex education very difficult issues to deal with in the classroom, and many were willing to work with the Love for Life project.

"I would ask the ask the Department to reconsider this decision."
