Phoenix Gas: Neeson calls for parties to work together

12.00.00am GMT Fri 19th Mar 2004

ALLIANCE Party Assembly member Sean Neeson, who has campaigned for the extension of the gas industry in Northern Ireland, is outraged by the announcement of a 20 percent rise in gas prices.

Speaking from Scotland, the Alliance spokesman on Enterprise, Trade and Investment, stated:

"This increase appears to be an attempt to end the gas industry for consumers in Northern Ireland. I am calling on all political parties to work together and meet the Industry Minister Ian Pearson, because it only through working collectively that we can put pressure on Phoenix Gas.

"It was in this way we achieved the extension of the gas pipeline in the early days of the last Assembly, and I find it difficult to believe that this increase has been sprung on consumers so quickly after a previous price rise. It will only serve to alienate existing and potential customers and undermine confidence in the industry."
