Safety of Maghaberry prisoners and staff must be priority: Bell

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Aug 2003

ALLIANCE Deputy Leader and Victims Spokesperson Eileen Bell has welcomed the Government's announcement today to review security at Maghaberry prison.

Mrs Bell, who raised the matter with the Secretary of State earlier today, said: "Alliance does not want to see a return to the situation that the Maze was in, but the safety of prisoners and staff has to be the priority.

"There have been attacks on the homes of prison officers in my own area of North Down, and alleged attacks on prisoners by prisoners. No-one wants this situation to deteriorate further.

"Clearly the review must look at how safety can be improved for all in a manner that doesn't result in prisoners taking over the wings."
