Age discrimination ban plan welcomed12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 2nd Jul 2003 ALLIANCE'S Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy has welcomed Government plans to ban employers from enforcing a retirement age below 70. Mr McCarthy, who served as chair of the Assembly Committee on Older People and Ageing, said: "These plans recognise that far from being on the scrapheap, in today's society older people still have an valuable role to play in the workplace. They deserve to be able to choose whether they retire at the usual age, or continue to work on, as often happens in the USA. "Alliance has been lobbying for an end to age discrimination, and this move to ban an early and enforced retirement age will be welcomed by all active older people who still have a contribution to make at work."
